Two Types of Protection in PDF
PDF format has two separate protection mechanisms: the user password required to open the file, and the owner password, which restricts printing, copying, or editing after the file is opened. The second type of protection can generally be removed much faster; the first requires analysis based on the PDF version and encryption strength.
Why This Happens
The most common scenarios are PDF files shared years ago whose owner can no longer be reached, or files you created yourself and whose password you have forgotten. Permission-restricted PDFs created through scanning in corporate archives can also present access or usage issues.
Approach
The file's encryption version (such as 40-bit, 128-bit, or 256-bit AES) is determined and the appropriate reverse-engineering technique is applied; permission restrictions are generally resolved much faster.
